Green water can involve suspended algae. Check water readings, lighting, and recent changes before choosing a response; reducing inputs does not guarantee clearance.

Light, waste, and nutrient conditions can contribute to algae growth. Review the tank and test the water; appearance alone does not identify one cause, and filtration performance depends on its media and design.
Before Considering a Blackout
Reduce excess light and feeding, test the water, and keep aeration and filtration running. Assess your fish, plants, and oxygen supply before a blackout; there is no guaranteed clearance date and a repeat blackout should not be automatic.
Fix the Light Budget
Review light duration and direct sunlight against the needs of your fish and plants. A timer can help control the schedule; the LED guide compares lighting options.
Fix the Nutrient Budget
Review feeding, waste removal, and maintenance for the species and water readings. Use measurements to guide changes rather than a universal feeding time or weekly-cleaning rule.

A water-test option to compare by its current instructions and measured parameters. Nitrate is one relevant reading; a low result alone does not guarantee clear water.

Green Water FAQ
Is green water harmful to fish?
Do not assume discolored water is harmless. Dense growth and other water-quality problems can affect oxygen or fish condition; test the water and assess distress promptly.
Will a water change alone fix green water?
A partial change may reduce waste and nutrients, but results depend on the source water and underlying conditions. Keep testing and review inputs; a blackout is not a required next step for every tank.
Do UV clarifiers work on green water?
A suitable UV clarifier can target suspended algae when operated within its instructions, including flow and compatibility. It does not remove every cause of green water or replace water-quality management.
