Look at the color of the cloudiness first — it narrows this down fast:
If your tank is less than 6-8 weeks old, this is almost certainly it. A brand-new aquarium hasn't built up enough beneficial bacteria yet to process fish waste, so a different bacteria population blooms rapidly to feed on the excess ammonia — and that bloom is what clouds the water white.
The fix: Don't panic-clean it. Keep feeding lightly, keep the filter running, and test ammonia/nitrite daily. This almost always clears on its own in 5-10 days as the tank finishes cycling. Large water changes during this window can actually reset the cycle and prolong the cloudiness.
Uneaten food and extra waste break down into exactly the kind of dissolved organic matter that feeds a bacterial bloom — even in an established tank. This is the most common cause in tanks that have been running fine for months and suddenly cloud up.
The fix: Cut back to what fish finish in 2-3 minutes, remove any uneaten food after feeding, and do a 25% water change with gravel vacuuming. If overfeeding keeps happening because it's hard to portion consistently, an automatic feeder removes the guesswork.
Gravel, sand, and some decor ship with a fine dust coating. If it wasn't rinsed thoroughly before going in — or got stirred up during a rescape — that dust stays suspended for a day or two.

A filter that's too small for the tank, or one that hasn't been rinsed in a while, can't keep up with mechanical and biological filtration — so fine particles and bacteria stay suspended instead of getting pulled out.

If the cloudiness has a distinct green tint rather than white or grey, it's a different problem entirely — a bloom of free-floating algae, usually triggered by too much light or a nutrient imbalance, not bacteria.
